Discriminating Against Recovered Addicts Is Just Wrong!

Jennifer Ginsberg: Six years ago, Jessica Gianfrocco was convicted of heroin possession. She served her time and has been on the straight and narrow ever since. Because she failed a routine background check, however, she has now been banned from volunteering at her daughter's elementary school. She has enlisted the support of the ACLU and is suing the Cranston, Rhode Island, school department for discrimination.
I saw something about that topic on TV last night. Great article.
Sometimes people are layered like that. There’s something totally different underneath than what’s on the surface. But sometimes, there’s a third, even deeper level, and that one is the same as the top surface one. Like with pie.

Hi
I’m posting this recovering addict myself. While i appreciate this women has made a mistake and wants to pay for it the schoolboard is right. Addicts, even recovered addicts are addicts for life. We will always be addicts one small slip up and we go right back downt hat old cycle. Calling it a disease is not an excuse we made mistakes, yes we are sorry for them but they are our own fault. We got sick from bad choices, i did and i’ll own that responability for the rest of my life but it was my own fault, ill be the first to admit it. I am not saying this women is not a good person now but the fact remains with her (and with myself) that a risk still remians that the school cannot afford to take. by all means take an interest in ur childrens education, teach them about the risks of addiction but do not expect the school to take a risk on a recovered addict they cannot afford to put that much faith in you and you mess up. I’m not saying you will, but we are addicts and we will be till the die we die, relaspe will always be a risk.
