I have little respect for Sarah Palin, but I believe "DWTS" took advantage of her 19-year-old daughter, capitalizing on Sarah's naivety and ... well, general ignorance. I also believe Sarah should have given her daughter a lot of candid advice before Bristol went into a situation like that.
I fully expected to fast-forward through Bristol's section. Then I heard her described as a "teen activist" and "public advocate" who was going to be dressed as her mother. Bristol's partner, Mark Ballas, explained that Bristol would rip off those conservative clothes and shake her booty and shimmy as hard as she could while dancing to "Mama Told Me (Not to Come)." My bleeding-liberal heart kept thinking, "This is so wrong."
Ballas said, "Bristol's really shy and she's only in the public eye because of her mom, so we have to find a way to make her stand out. We're gonna have Bristol dress up kinda like her mom -- very conservatively -- and then, like, whatever this dress is, we'll tear off into something like ... ka-bam!"
Of all the performers, Bristol was the only one who was overtly sexualized, and even though the Palin family has never received much of my attention, I felt the intent was obvious. If Bristol continues as a teen advocate, I hope she will first develop better self-advocacy, starting with next week's "DWTS" performance (since this show is the forum she's choosing, and she made it through to the next round).
Moms, what do you think?
