Mom-To-Be: I used to have one of those steel-trap memories. The kind that would drive my husband crazy because I never. Forgot. Anything. (A very handy tool when having a spat.)

Pregnant woman
And then I got knocked up.

I'd gone to see a psychic before I conceived, and she'd told me that not only would I get pregnant, but I'd have a textbook pregnancy. I smiled, thinking she meant that everything would go smoothly, and that none of that stuff that happens to other moms-to-be would happen to moi. Now I realize that she meant I'd have ALL of the "fun" and common pregnancy side effects affect me -- and then some.

I can deal with the weight gain and the mood swings and even the disgusting stuff no one talks about. But what I can't deal with is my inability to remember anything. My memory was something that I could always rely on. Someone needed to recall a story from high school? I was on it! Someone wondered who'd won the Academy Award for Best Picture in 2000? They called me! But now, I can't even remember what I had for breakfast this morning, let alone what big news story happened this week (something about a mine?).

I'm counting on the fact that it will come back. That after the baby is born, I'll remember things again. It will be like coming out of a fog and seeing the light! Although someone needs to tell me about this thing I've heard about called "mommy brain" ....

Your brain is simply changing and making room for the new family member. Your brain is going to have to grow and change in ways that is now being looked into.

Women’s brains actually grow during the babies first year. You wont feel like it but it does. It has to. You are learning all kinds of new skills and behaviors to care for this helpless little human being.

You may never function at the exact same level as before but it wont be as bad as the pregnancy fog. Don’t lament that though, because you are now going to have to fit in everything required to care for your baby. It takes alot of space.

And don’t feel to bad. During my third pregnancy I stopped off at a Starbucks or a cup of coffee and when they asked me my NAME I didn’t have the slightest clue what they were talking about. I had to check my drivers license.

I too had that steel trap memory. And like you lost it to pregnancy brain. I know call it mommy brain since my memory is still not what it was. While it drives me crazy I wouldnt trade my 15month old son for it back!

I went through this as well. My doctor assured me that my brain would return to normal shortly after I had my son. Well, my son is going to be 2 in March, and I can assure you that it has NOT returned. Mind you, I have three kids, and this only happened with my last. My oldest are 19 and 14, so it has been a while, and maybe it’s old age now (?) lol, but I feel your pain.
