Zoe Smith, 16, Makes British Weightlifting History

Telegraph: The 16-year-old grammar school pupil, who also made history by becoming the youngest athlete to take part in a Commonwealth Games weightlifting competition, took the bronze medal behind India's Renu Balu Chanu Yumnum, the defending champion, and Australia's Seen Lee.

"I'm so overwhelmed, I don't know whether to laugh or cry," said the teenager, who only recently began her A-level courses and had to take three weeks out of school in Bexleyheath, Kent, to travel to India.

Smith, one of the most exciting young weightlifting talents Britain has ever produced, has amassed a string of age-group titles and records since taking up the sport at the age of 12, including the gold medal at the Commonwealth Youth Games in Pune, India, two years ago. Wednesday was her first appearance in a senior international championship.
