Recession Mama Michele Ashamalla: While I was doing some late-night channel surfing, I came across an episode of TLC's "19 Kids & Counting." I am pretty fascinated by anyone with inordinate amounts of children and how they function on a day-to-day basis.
In this episode, they were doing laundry. Loads and loads of laundry that made my eight loads a week seem paltry by comparison. They were also making their own laundry detergent, which seemed insane to me. When I saw how much they used, though, I could see it was a big savings!
I then thought about making other products. Think of all the chemicals you could keep out of your house! I know about the natural cleaning properties of baking soda and citrus, but I wasn't sure how to make those into cleaning products. (I couldn't very well just rub a lemon across a table ....) However, I did
find a website that has a ton of recipes
for household products: MakeYourOwn.net
. It also has recipes
for fragrances, which might be a fun project for my older daughter. Maybe she could make some and put them into little bottles for holiday gifts.
I wish the site had reviews of the products people made, but maybe you could submit some of your favorite tried-and-true homemade products here for the rest of us ....
