Recession Mama Michele Ashamalla: I'm a big fan of gift cards -- not only to give to others, but for me to use when I'm shopping or dining out!

Gift cards
Around the holidays, when there are actually deals to be had on gift cards, I buy cards from places I frequent throughout the year. Here are a few good current deals:

  • Buy a $50 Borders (or Godiva, or AMC Theaters) gift card, get a $10 gift card free.
  • Exchange $40 at Coinstar, get a $10 promo code to use at iTunes, Lowe's, Borders or Regal/ United Artists/Edwards Cinemas. At Coinstar, you can exchange without a fee if you get a gift card instead of cash.
  • A bunch of other deals can be found on this site. For the restaurant deals, remember that you can buy a card on your way in and use it right then. Keep cards in your wallet or car, so they are easy to get to when you shop or dine. You can always combine them with any coupons you might have. Sometimes gift cards have a limited window for redemption, so don't make the mistakes that companies are counting on: Don't forget about your gift cards -- or lose them!

Be careful buying gift cards/certificates from “Just Pay Half” deals you may see locally. Our local news & radio stations run these on their websites several times during the year. You can get gift cards/certificates for half the cost of whatever the face value is. They do have great deals, but be sure to read the fine print on EVERY offer, each is different. I bought 2 last Christmas to give as gifts. I thought I would have 2 $50 gift certificates to a local bowling alley/arcade for my nephews but it turned out they expired Dec 31 of that same year. Only five days to use them once given as gifts.

Hey there I’m experiencing a trouble reading your blog, I’m having 401 errors extremely regularly, I am not extremely sure as to why however if I reload the page it returns alright.

Can I make a word of advice? There’s no doubt that you have had sth good above. Yet let’s say you also added a couple of references towards a website that supports what you’re saying? Or simply you could give us something to check out, something would link up what you were talking about, something concrete?
