- Always make sure there is a responsible (i.e., sober) parent or two to look after the
kids.
- Have something for the kids to do. Make your own hot fudge sundaes,
decorate cookies, make and decorate cupcakes, make and decorate New Years' hats, make your own
noisemakers out of cans and pennies, then decorate them ....
- Do a nonalcoholic toast at midnight (or before, if the kids are little). If you're on the West Coast, try ringing in the East Coast New Year.
- Teach your kids about New Year's resolutions. Make it an annual tradition to have each person in the family write down his or her top five resolutions for the coming year, then go around the circle and take turns reading them aloud. Finally, put them into an envelope, seal it and open it next New Year's Eve, so you can check your progress.
- Have separate kid and adult parties going (they can even be theme parties, such as a black-and-white ball or costume party). Arrange for the kids and
adults to have dinner together; then the kids can do their own thing and the parents can do theirs. The two groups can join up again to do the New Year's countdown and watch the ball drop.
- Put the pets in a safe place ahead of time. (Many are afraid of fireworks and noisemakers.)
- Make a signature cocktail for the adults. Here are two tasty Grey Goose recipes:
1/2 oz. Grey Goose Original Vodka
1/4 oz coffee liqueur
Lemon twist (for garnish)
Method
Pour the ingredients into a cocktail shaker filled with ice, stir with a bar spoon and strain into a chilled cocktail glass. Garnish with a lemon twist.
GREY GOOSE GOLDENROD
1 part Grey Goose La Poire Flavored Vodka
1/2 part Elderflower cordial
1/4 part lemon juice
4 parts Champagne or sparkling Moscato
Edible flowers (for garnish)
Method
Fill a cocktail shaker with ice and add vodka through lemon juice. Shake well and strain into a Champagne glass. Top with Champagne (or Moscato, if you'd like the drink to be a little sweeter) and garnish with edible flowers.
