Anh-Chi: The first day my husband and I arrived in Vietnam, we visited my mother-in-law in the hospital. Luckily, she was discharged from the hospital that very day. When I walked inside her hospital room, she was hooked up to various IVs and looked extremely lethargic and run down.

She told me stories about her hospital stay -- how she almost lost her mind so much that she was tied down to her bed, how difficult it was to maintain an extremely strict diet, and how terrifying it was for the family to see her in and out of a coma. I was shocked to hear my mother-in-law so traumatized and distressed, and the only words I could utter at the time were "I'm so, so sorry, Mom." And I held her hand, while tears slowly rolled down my face.

The fact that she's doing better now is more gratifying than I can describe. It's seriously a miracle that she can all of a sudden improve so quickly, and I believe 110% that my husband and I have something to do with it. My mother-in-law has been so happy to see us that she has more hope to live now. We can't guarantee how many years she'll survive, but we're satisfied just to spend that much more time with her.

So when I get back to the States, I'll try my best to communicate with her every day. I'm crossing my fingers that I'll get pregnant next month, so I can show my mother-in-law my progress. Undoubtedly she'll ask me to show my belly every month, so I have no choice but to prepare for that. Plus, if I get pregnant next month, my baby would be born the same month as my husband's birthday. All the more to celebrate!!!
