Pregnant ... ? Pregnant ... ! Congratulations! Who knew peeing on a stick could be so profound. So now what?
"If you have a positive pregnancy test, call the doctor," says Dr. Suzanne Gilberg-Lenz, an OB/GYN and advisory member at momlogic. "If you've never been pregnant before, the doctor may not want to see you right away to give things time to develop. If you've had a miscarriage or you're older, the doctor will have you come in immediately."
Different doctors manage things differently, but Dr. Gilberg-Lenz says all doctors agree that you need to both get ready for what's about to happen, and then "enjoy the ride."
"The thing that happens that's really interesting is most people have a hard time doing what they were doing before the pregnancy," says Dr. Gilberg-Lenz. "Suddenly you feel so wiped out you can barely get up, or you're grossed out by smells or foods you normally love. It's time to adopt a more flexible attitude. You have to be ready for your body to change, your feelings to change, and your daily lifestyle to change."
Which brings up the question of exactly how to be ready for all these changes. "If you weren't prepared, now is the time to stop doing unsafe things like smoking, drinking, or eating food that's not healthy for baby, such as raw fish or unpasteurized meats and cheeses, and cold cuts that haven't been heated up."
Dr. Gilberg-Lenz says one of the most common questions she hears is about exercising. "You can exercise to your normal tolerance level of fitness -- spin classes, swimming, it's fine," she says. "You don't want to go into a steam room or sauna, but your usual exercise is fine."
