KORTO, 30
Marital Status: Married with a 12-year-old from a previous relationship
Hometown: Staten Island, NY
Profession: Mom and Student
Trying to Conceive: Just started
Korto had her first child when she was only 19 years old. She was a young single mother who struggled adjusting to motherhood at such a tender young age. She felt as though her life had come to a halt and had to put aside her dreams of going to school and get a job to support herself and her child. That whole experience deterred her from ever wanting more children. Then she met her current husband, who she told that before they walked down the aisle that she did not want any more children. Although he didn't have children of his own, he agreed. After nearly three years of marriage, Korto has suddenly felt an overwhelming urge to have another child. She says she is desperate to have a baby with her husband.
Korto: My name is Korto. I live in Staten Island, New York, with my wonderful husband Bensen and my lovely daughter Nina. Bensen works in Manhattan as a commercial real estate broker and spends most of his free time watching sports, reading, and working out. Nina enjoys anything that has to do with the arts. She's currently taking up fashion designing, gymnastics, and hip-hop dancing. I am currently completing a degree in Media Communications, and work on independent film projects when time permits. I enjoy cooking, throwing dinner parties, and decorating my house. I was born on February 26, 1979, in Monrovia, Liberia, and I moved to the United States at the age of 12.
I met my husband five years ago in Manhattan -- unbeknownst to us, we lived a few blocks away from each other on Staten Island. We dated for two years before he popped the question on Valentine's Day 2006, and married in August of that same year! We are a blended family; my daughter Nina is from a previous relationship. Although we live a very busy life, we make it a priority to spend quality time together each week. We enjoy playing board games (our favorites are Scrabble, Ludo, and Uno), watching movies, and spending time in the park -- our time together is always a blast! I often look forward to my one-on-one time spent with Nina and Bensen individually. Nina and I often go shopping, get manicures/pedicures, see a movie, or just watch her favorite Disney show ("Hannah Montana"). It is during these times that we truly bond. Bensen and I enjoy going to our favorite sushi restaurant or getting a sitter and cuddling up to a good movie. My family means everything to me and I wouldn't trade them for the world.
Before we wed, I informed Ben, who is childless, that I was not inclined to having another child due to the hardship I'd faced with Nina. I had Nina at the tender age of 18, which caused my parents to become very unsupportive of me. To make matters worse, her dad and I had a falling-out soon after she was born. Although I loved my baby with all of my heart and I did all I could to provide the best life possible for her, the obstacles I faced discouraged me from wanting another child. When I mentioned this to Bensen, I expected him to say something like, "If you're unwilling to give me a child, I wouldn't marry you," but instead he agreed with my decision.
Fast-forward nearly three years after our wedding and everything seems to be set in place: we have a comfortable home, Nina is growing up into a beautiful young lady and is hitting her stride scholastically, and I'm finally realizing my dream of pursuing a career in media production after graduation. However, the last few months I've been feeling a sudden need to have a baby. At first I thought it was just temporary, but I've been consumed for several months with the need to add an addition to our family. I often daydream about the baby and the love he (Bensen wants a QB) would receive from his parents and big sister. Nina is praying for a little sister to play dress-up with. I am in love with the idea of having a baby around and have no preference, although a little Bensen would be nice. I look forward to the journey and this new chapter in our life. I plan on enjoying every moment of the ride!
