Meredith: My son and I recently went to Washington, D.C., for his fifth grade class trip. Probably the most memorable part of the trip was our visit to Arlington National Cemetery and the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. If you have never had the opportunity to visit, I would encourage you to do so.

My son made an observation while he was there and I would like to share it. My 11-year-old so eloquently said, "There are so many graves it looks like snow covering the ground." I thought his observation was right on, and a great allusion to the cemetery. The dead that are buried there and their graves truly look like new fallen snow. There is a certain calm and beauty that comes with fresh snow. This final resting place upholds the beauty and dignity that our fallen soldiers each deserve.

The visit to the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and the changing of the guards was just as awe-inspiring. To think of all the men and women who so bravely gave their lives so that we may be free is just amazing. During our trip to D.C. we were also lucky enough to visit the Vietnam Veterans Memorial wall. This was another unbelievable representation of the men and women who have died protecting us.

On Memorial Day and every day, we have an opportunity to thank those that have died protecting us. Whether it is in silent prayer, reflection, or visiting the grave of a fallen soldier, it is important that we remember and teach our children. So, as you spark up your barbeques this Memorial Day and spend it with your family, be sure to remember what this day is all about. To those that have served, are serving, or have lost their life protecting me, my family, and my country -- Thank You and God Bless You.
