The Heart of the Olympics

In the 2004 Athens Olympics, Czech Republic's Katy Kurkova, after having won a bronze medal in shooting, was consoling fellow shooter Matt Emmons--a Jersey boy--after he finished a disappointing eighth. When Katy went up to him, she immediately felt a connection. They married in 2007 in the Czech Republic and are living an Olympic fairy tale as they compete together in the Beijing Olympics. As Katy was on the verge of winning the first gold medal of the 2008 games, her husband watched from the stands, nervous yet, confident: "I think it's wonderful having my teammate, my wife, with me every day, and that's perfect," Matt said. "But it would be less stress sometimes, because you're worried about the other one when they're competing. So instead of just worrying about yourself, now there's another person to worry about." Katy will be the one in the stands when Matt competes on August 15 and 17. They are hoping to bring home four gold medals collectively, but if they don't, they have more important things on their mind: welcoming another Olympian into their family. For this team, happily-ever-after doesn't depend on gold medals, it depends on family: "Family is much more important to us than sports, so we're looking forward to it."
