Connell says single moms should be on the lookout for the following red flags in a potential mate:
• He's evasive.
• He doesn't want to accept phone calls, and always says he will call you.
• He won't tell you his address, and always wants to go to your house instead of his.
But even if you're already married with children (like Boss was), he says the following red flags should also be a concern:
• He won't divulge details of his past.
• He says both his parents died. (Clark said this to Sandra Boss--and Connell says many con artists use this story so their lack of family history will not be questioned.)
• He gives you conflicting stories, or you notice details do not match up.
• He can't provide documents like his birth certificate or Social Security card.
If you see any of the above warning signs in your relationship, Connell says it's time to run a background check. One typically runs $20 to $50, but Connell says it's the best investment you can make. "All you need is the guy's name and date of birth to run a basic check, which will tell you if he has a criminal record," he says. "But if you have the man's Social Security number, we can also run a Social Security match to make sure he really is who he says he is."
While employment screening makes up the bulk of the business, Connell says he sees more and more women running background checks on men they're involved with. "Once a woman verifies a man's true identity and checks out his background and criminal record, then she can determine if that's someone she wants to have a romantic relationship with," he concludes. "Better safe than sorry."
Would you run a background check on your man?
