Beijing Gossip:
• Leryn Franco, 26, a Paraguayan javelin thrower/pageant queen/model with her own calendar, was recently named "The Olympic Crush" for her striking beauty. However, she was eliminated from the Games yesterday after failing to qualify for the javelin finals, 23 meters short of her personal best.
• In what's been dubbed "the swimsuit controversy," Spain's synchronized swimmers have been banned from wearing a swimsuit with embedded waterproof lights, which they hoped would give an extra shine to their Olympic routine. "It looks a bit like Christmas lights," said swimmer Andrea Fuentes. "This is a very conservative sport ... their excuse that is you cannot have accessories on your swimsuit, but they are sewn in. If you use those standards, sequins are a type of accessory."
• Amanda Beard is in hot water over statements she made about Michael Phelps on 93.7 KRQ Tucson's Johnjay and Rich in the Morning. Asked point blank what her and Michael's status was, Beard stated, "I am not dating Michael Phelps." When pressed on whether they'd ever kissed, the 26-year-old used her best Valley Girl delivery to say, "Eww! No. Come on." Then, when told that Phelps might dream about dating her, she replied, "Eww, that's so nasty! ... Come on, I have really good taste." Ouch.
