A lactation consultant would tell you... forever! But obviously that's not pheasable. The recommended time is one year minimum. It's totally up to your comfort level. I don't think I could breastfeed my child until they were three, by then they'd know how to un-button my shirt, and that just seems odd to me.
I breastfed my son until he was 21 months. I have a friend whose daughter is 3 and she still will take a sip before bed, this won't be lasting much longer, they are expecting #2 in 9 months. Whatever you feel comfortable with is right for you and your baby. Some babies will wean themselves before they turn one. Just go with the "flow," you'll know when it is time to wean.
I agree its totally up to you, but not just you your baby aswell. I breastfed until she was 4 months, then i started subsituting with formula and bottle expressed breastmilk, but kept breastfeeding directly from my breast for her nightly feedings.. it was very convinient, it was great! eventually my supply got lower so the formula took over, but I was very satisfied to have provided her with the best start for her first most important and fragile months of life. she is 7 months now and (thankfully) has never been sick :]
I think its really up to you. My sister in law still breastfeeds her one year old once in a while because her daughter eats solid foods already. She still produces milk..so its really up to you when to wean your child. I think when the child is 3 years old they shouldn't be on the breast though..:)
