More Reasons Why My Kids Go Hungry at School

user-pic

We wrote Kids Go Hungry at School feeling that it was an issue that has effected many of our children. Mom Jean had this to say: "This is very unfair to the kids who aren't as privileged as others. Most of the kids have their own opinions of others just because of the way they dress, etc. and don't bother to get to know each other for who they are and not what they have. Unfortunately, they have been brought up that way. My child's school doesn't even give our kids enough time to eat lunch which is just as bad. They expect between 550 to 600 kids to be in the same area at the same time, go through a lunch line, find a place to sit and try to eat in a total of 18 minutes. This includes the time it takes to get to the cafeteria, and to get to their next class plus allow the teachers to butt in line to get their food."

What do you think schools should do about this?

when i was in school we had a very nice program. every family had their own lunch account, and every child had their own pin number. parents put money into the account and kids got their lunch, put in their number went on their way. you maybe had to tell them your name also so they knew you were using your account. nobody knew how much you were paying for lunch except maybe the person watching the screen when you put in your number.

Luckily my kids can take snacks to eat at both recesses, so they can supplement their lunches that way, or just eat at recess what they didn't finish at lunch. And of course an after school snack. It is absolutely absurd to expect the kids to eat and finish in such a short amount of time. They do not work as adults do, and we can barely finish our lunches (and all that is required) in a 30 min. time frame. Kids are MUCH slower, seriously, I am NOT a fan of school administration.

i thought it was bad at my kids school and they actually have 30 min.
It was just sad one day i brought cupcakes for my daughters b-day and the lunch monitors said they had to finish their entire lunch in order to get one. Well, with walking to the cafeteria, standing in line, finding your seat, and allowing time to dump their trays and line up, they have about 15 min. to actually eat and these poor little kids were trying so hard to scarf it down.
At 5 min. until time to dump, I started handing them out...even though they werent finished. The monitor got mad at me, but I didnt care!

Very true, my daughter lunch does not come home eaten half the time either! Frustrating when you try and pack a fresh lunch and it just spoils cause the kids don't have enough time!
