questions about my 11 month old...

default userpic

my son rylan will be 1 year old on april 2. at this point he doesn't walk, doesn't crawl, doesn't pull himself up to stand, cannot pick himself up to a sitting position when he falls over, won't hold his bottle or sippy cup, and has yet to speak his first word. he is a happy playful baby and babbles a lot but still has yet to meet a lot of his developmental milestones. we took him to the pediatrician and he really does not seem worried at this point because he says those are just guidelines and some kids don't walk at this age and some don't talk yet. however we are starting evaluations for physical therapy, developmental therapy, and occupational therapy. my husband says it's our fault he's behind and in turn makes me feel bad. we always held rylan and he played in his exersaucer all the time so maybe it was. we have since thrown away the exersaucer. does anyone else have any input or similar stories?

I used to tell moms in your situation the same things most of the posters above wrote... Don't worry he'll be fine etc. Most of the time it is true. However, a close friend of mine gave birth to a healthy full term baby and at a year old he was not sitting up or crawling or anything and she did what you did and took him to the doctor who said everything was fine and not to worry. She took him back again at 18 months and he had learned to sit up but still could not stand or walk. At 2 he was the same and the doctors kept telling her not to worry. At 2 1/2 I got really worried after I babysat him for a few days and realized that his legs were like jelly even when he was laying flat and I tried to play feet games with him. I finally talked her into taking him to a specialist offering to pay for it myself. It turned out that he has a pretty severe case of cerebral palsy. The pediatrician said it is hardly ever seen in full term babies anymore so he had not really even considered it as a possibility. So, now I tell moms it is probably nothing but it is worth the money in my opinion to get that second opinion so that if something is not quite right you can get the therapy going as soon as possible. My friends son did learn to walk but he has many other things to learn and the nearly three year delay in his physical therapy did not help. So I hate to be the only downer in so many encouraging posts but if it were my child who was not sitting or standing or at least trying to walk by a year old and especially if his legs were limp. I would get the second opinion and hope that I was just wasting my money.

My son is almost 18 months and just started walking. When he went for his 15 month check up his dr. scheduled appointments for him to be evaluated. When they came to my house, they told me that absolutely nothing was wrong with him. And that even if I wanted to take him to a speech therapist or occupational therapist that they wouldn't see me because there wasn't anything wrong with him. Technically crawling isn't a milestone because some children NEVER crawl. It's just my opinion, but I think you should stick it out and give your little one some more time. Babies can also feel pressured into doing things, which in turn sets them back a little. Breathe easy and enjoy him sitting still and watching him learn all the little things. Oh yeah, and as far as your husband telling you it's all your fault....Don't listen to him. It's nobody's fault that the little one isn't ready to walk, talk or crawl. He will do it all when he's ready...and then you'll be thinking back to the times when he would just sit there and not be all over the place and into everything.♥ :)

Its true, he'll walk/talk/hold his cup when he wants to. Another aspect to think about is..does he have to walk/talk/hold his cup? I mean are you right there to pick him up? Does he grunt and you start handing him things? These are common "first time mommy" things. Also, please relish the stage he's in. He'll grow up fast enough. Don't spend all your time anticipating what he'll do next. Really enjoy what he's doing right now. It will all be over before you know it.

It's not your fault. My daughter who is 3 1/2 is starting speech. Sometimes kids are little behind. Your doc is right about the guidelines. My sister (who is 11 years younger than I) didn't walk until she was 19 months old. She just graduated as a Physiscian Assistant. Give him time. He might just be a late bloomer! Besides Einstein was a late talker right!

He's totally fine. Most of the time the smart ones save it all up and start doing all of those things all at once.Mine used to pull himself around with his arms.We thought he was part mermaid and had no use of his legs. He's fine. All that babbling he's doing is him mimmocking conversation and the words will soon start to flow and they will never stop.NEVER!!! Don't rush it. All in due time. Enjoy the fact that he hasn't tried to flush your bra down the toilet and that he can't tell you "no" or that you can take a shower when you want because he isn't pulling the shower curtain open getting himself and his cute outfit wet. It will happen, don't stress it.

First of all it is not your fault and don't be so hard on yourself. You have to remember there is a certain time your child has to do anything. It is when your sons is ready! I had a niece that was they same way. She didn't start crawling until 13 months. It sounds like this is your first child. The first child is always slow because he doesn't see other kids to copy. Relax and he will be fine!
