Battling Over the Spring Break Issue

user-pic

Parents and teenagers take sides in whether or not sending your children to spring break is acceptable.

We posted Spring Break Confessions: Part 1, sparking a lot of controversy over trusting our teens. Eyez2cwith says: "No way would I allow my teen to go off alone on a week with friends. Not that I don't trust her, I don't trust others. If my child wants spring break, they go with me, and get some alone time, but not enough that I have to worry about them. Of course, they are taught what is acceptable public behavior and what isn't. Common sense is TAUGHT... not inherited!"

Thatkid disagrees: "Uh, did the author of this just realize that kids go to spring break for the sex, drugs, and drinking? Because then the author has probably been sheltered their entire life. The point is we are kids and want to be kids, you putting loads of schoolwork and stressing us kids out are what turns us to doing stuff like this. The secret to getting kids to stop doing drugs....stop stressing us out!"

Do you think that parenting is the reason why teens turn to alcohol and drugs?

I allowed my children to spend spring break in the outskirts of Galveston. I had 2 children doing it at the same time, they knew to look out for each other, they did, but I still worried. They were not raised in a community where they had to be on their guard! This was before the murder of that young lady. It could have very easly happened to us ! Kids are Kids! It is up to us to be PARENTS !

Everyone always wants to blame the parent! Maybe, just maybe, sometimes that is true, BUT not always! Everyone has to find someone to blame other than themselves! I raised kids -- They make their own choices - we can only do so much to guide them in the right direction. Whatever kid you quoted about parents stressing kids out I would love to get a hold of --that kid knows nothing about stress!!! I would love to teach him some STRESS! Apprently, he suffered nothing and he is playing BIG man , Huh! I hope he is reading this because he ain't nothing

Spring Break ! Be Concerned ! Everyone thinks their teen is the best ! They are Teens!!!! Come on now, they are going to tell you what you want to hear! Check out who they are going with, where they will be staying and what and how many adults will be going ! Have check in times appointed even if they have adults on the trip with them -- Buddy system -- inforce the importance-look at the Aruba Sr. trip !! Not only does that happen out of the U.S. it happens right here at home in the U.S. !!!
In the State of Texas they still have no one for the rape and murder of a mother on the beaches outsid5e of Galveston, Tx. This was a young mother who also took care of her elderly grandfather. She had a good reputation from all accounts and was raised approx.only 1 hr. away. She was comfortable in her surroundings , as most are that live within a 2 hr. area of Galveston. I as a 50 year old would have thought nothing of walking on that beach when she did ! I now know different! This day and age it is much worse than when we were young!
So, if your teens are some place they are not familiar with -- --
I leave you with that thought -- God Bless And Good Luck !!

Alright. I'm 18, female, and a senior at USF. My parents trusted me enough to let me go to Panama City Beach this past Spring Break. All my friends are 21, my roommates all guys right now are even 21. Nothing happened in Panama. I didn't get drunk or sleep around. And even though there is alcohol in the house I don't drink ever - which some of my friends think is strange. Not all college students or teenagers drink. Of the millions who are out there, the news only makes aware of those which end terribly or go awry. Media doesn't broadcast that group of teens and college students who just chooses to go bowling or dancing.

I agree with the comment just before this one !!

I went on my first official Spring Break trip when I was a Freshman in college back in 1993. It was also at South Padre. Things were fairly calm back then. I remember a lot of people drinking, but I also remember a lot of police presence every where you went. My friends and I were pretty responsible so we stayed out of trouble. It is easy to see how younger kids would have a hard time fighting the temptations that may arise during a Spring Break trip. I would not let my child go until they were 18 years old.

Having raised a daughter & a son who are happily married now, I have regrets of being too strict as I was in an abusive relationship. I had no support to enjoy communication & YES, I would have allowed my teens to go on spring break. I feel if I didn't do my job as a parent, they would do their thing regardless.

"The American pop culture is teaching girls to live without a moral compass," so says Jason Goldtrap, author of the novel Sarah Conrad of Eagle Creek. "We are raising kids to be fatality neutral in a world which features an ever growing chasm between action and consequence. Get drunk= have fun. Do drugs= get away with it. Animalistic sex=why not? There is little reason to be good a person in such an environment."

I was an out of control teen 50 years ago and have raised dozens of foster kids many of whom were in foster care because of just such behavior. Bad parenting, neglectful parenting, parents who are themselves involved with drugs and alcohol -- these are the problem. There may well be more of these parents, now, but they have always existed in sizable numbers.

Also, some teens are naturally moderate. Others are not. Sensible parents keep a close eye on their kids until they know which kind of teenager they have. My advice: puberty changes some "good" kids into out of control party animals. Peers who are in trouble are a huge warning sign. Take your parenting seriously and your children will probably grow up without too many problems.

And by the way, I paid for my own spring break trip, and worked during my month off for winter break.

I am a college freshman and went on spring break last month. I did not do any drugs, get wasted or engage in risky sex. I simply enjoyed the sun and a stress-free week with friends. We tanned all day long, and then danced the night away. It was a much needed break after a very stressful semester. Teens are being portrayed as reckless sex maniacs on this website and that is definitely jumping to conclusions. Many teens do engage in this behavior, but most of us do not and its terrible to read comments like "my child will NEVER go on spring break after seeing this" because its a generalization that does not speak for most teens. I had a wonderful and safe spring break and I feel if planned and executed responsibly, Spring Break is an experience every teen or college student should have atleast once. It was my first trip without a parent and really developed my sense of adulthood and existing relationships with friends. Also, with the ridiculous amount of work piled on at my college, without my Spring Break trip I would have burned out. If your teen has been raised with good morals and has not seen a bad example at home, then it is unfair to restrict your teen from fun, character and relationship building experiences like Spring Break.

Parents need to stop paying for their kids to go get blasted and make poor decisions. My son came home for spring break and worked! A novel idea...as he put it "my parents are the only ones who didn't pay for me to go get wasted somewhere warm and sunny". Our children come from a generation who expect their parents to fund everything, college, room and board, clothing, spring break trips, car, car insurance, gas---very few of my son's friends work for what they want. Is this what we should be teaching our kids? We are very proud of him and he has a sense of accomplishment because he worked, saved his money, bought his own car, pays his own rent. We pay his tuition and school costs...which does not include a trip to Padres Island, Texas, Mexico or Aruba!

I completely disagree with Thatkid! Chances are, if Eyez2cwith is anything like me, it isn't that we've led sheltered lives, but rather the opposite. We've endured a lot of pain over the years and have had to accept the poor choices we have made in our lives that have prevented us from achieving our childhood dreams. People like us marvel at how we survived those teenage years and didn't end up seriously hurting ourselves or others in the process.

Our hope, as parents is that we can save our children the pain of living with the regrets we live with every day. Regrets for the bad decisions we've made along (the much longer) journey we have had. You may think that we don't know what it's like to be you, but believe me, been there, done that!
