do to help him?

NOT KNOWING THAT IT'S ABOUT TO RING IS PROBABLY THE PROBLEM. YOU SHOULD RECORD DIFFERENT SOUNDS SUCH AS THE RINGING BELL, A FIRE TRUCK, A CRYING BABY AND OR A DOGS BARKING. PUT IT IN THE CD PLAYER AND HAVE HIM PUSH PLAY. SET THE VOLUME TO LOW AT FIRST THEN SLOWLY INCREASE IT. IF HE LIKE TO BE HUGGED, THEN DO THAT WHILE LISTENING OR ANYTHING THAT CALMS HIM.

My daughter is 8 now, But what i still do is remind her that the bell is goona ring or that the dryer buzzer goes off and even the trash truck comes on wed . In fact anything with loud sudden noises just try to walk them through it. It seemed to help her that she knew it was coming then it would be gone and good luck

Maybe you could get him a loud horn of his own that he coud practice making loud noises with in order to get himself used to the loudness. You could even let him sneak up on you and blow it to show him that being startled is not quite the same as being afraid. If you are startled and then laugh maybe he will get the idea that being startled can be fun.
