Dr. Temple Grandin, diagnosed with autism at age 2, says early intervention is key.
Dr. Temple Grandin didn't talk until she was 4. But today, she has a Ph.D in Animal Science and teaches at Colorado State University. The author of Thinking in Pictures: My Life With Autism, talked to momlogic about what parents of autistic kids can do to help their kids thrive.
- It starts with one: Temple believes that intervention at age 2 helped her to overcome her "handicap." "Every specialist agrees that you have to get one-to-one instruction with a really good teacher for 3- to 5-year-old kids," said Temple, who did not begin speaking until she was 4, and was extremely sensitive to touch and noise. "While there is a lot of controversy as to what type of teaching, the worst you can do with a young autistic kid is nothing." For more insight from Dr. Grandin, Keep reading...

After a 13-year-old was arrested for trying to harm a child with a severe peanut allergy, one Mom shares her personal story.
A teen was busted recently for intentionally planting peanut butter cookie crumbs in the lunchbox of a classmate who had a severe
peanut allergy.
Unfortunately, this isn't the first case of this kind of insidiously dangerous bullying. Momlogic spoke with Lisa VanEssendelft, a Mom whose own allergy-stricken children have both been "peanut bullied" at school.

Can't wait for your baby's first words? Better start talking. A lot.
A new baby gadget is getting some press again, this time showing up on Good Morning America. Lena,
an electronic word counter that attaches to your baby's clothes and
digitally records and tallies the words the child is exposed to throughout the day,
retails for about 400 bucks.
Apparently, says the Lena Web site, a child should hear 25 million words by the time they're 4 years old (that's 17,000 words a day!) or they'll fall short in kindergarten, land a low-paying job, and wind up living in the streets. Keep Reading... |

Finding a good job is hard enough--so how did a woman land a prestigious military post when seven months pregnant?
Not only is Carme Chacon the first woman ever to be defense minister in her native Spain, she's also pregnant. Really pregnant. Makes us wonder if she was upfront about her condition when the Spanish Prime Minister appointed her to the post last week. Did she hide behind a couch during the interview? In the U.S., under the federal Pregnancy Discrimination Act, it's against the law to refuse to hire someone because she's pregnant. Still-- waddling walking into a job interview carrying WAY more than just a resume seems like job placement suicide.
Did you ever keep your pregnancy a secret from a potential boss? |

Moms who let kids eat food that dropped on the floor may just want to think twice.
We've probably all done it... kid drops food on floor, you pick it up and hand it back. Five-second rule, right? Researchers now say that even a nanosecond is long enough for food to gather and breed dangerous bacteria. Guess that means we shouldn't clean off those pacifiers and lollipops with our mouths and hand 'em back, huh?
Will this change whether you let your kids eat off the floor? |

We reveal the shocking results of our spring break poll.
What happens on spring break stays on spring break...until now.We traveled to South Padre Island for our exclusive Mom•Logic Investigation: Spring Break Confessions, featured on Good Morning America, The O'Reilly Factor and Inside Edition. We told you about the drinking, the drugs, and the sex, and our experts gave tips on how to talk to your kids about it. But when we asked parents and teens to take a poll about spring break--we were even more surprised at what we found.
It's understandable that 70% of parents were more anxious about what would happen to their children at spring break because of the Natalee Holloway disappearance. But only about 30% of teens admitted Natalee Hollway's story impacted decisions they made--which is truly scary. Keep Reading...
