MomLogic's editor-in-chief Sabrina Weill on why teens sometimes keep key information away from their parents.
Almost half of teens (47%) say they've never talked to their parents
about sex, drugs, cigarettes, or alcohol, according to a study
released today by WE tv and Harris (WE begins airing an 8-part docu-series
tonight: High School Confidential which we plan to check out).
When researching my book about teens and sex, often teens would say (and believe) "My Mom would KILL me if she knew..." secrets ranging from a kiss with the "wrong boy" to a stolen after-school cigarette, and beyond. Keep Reading... |

With spring fever coming on, people everywhere have lovin' on the brain--and your kid might be no exception. As kids hit those not-so-sweet tween years, Moms search for answers to keep it together.
Somewhere between 8 and 13 years old, something takes over our children and they start acting like strangers who want nothing to do with us. Is there anything we can do about it, or is it just the way it is?
Mom•Logic friend and counselor, Rosanne Tobey offer some expert tips on how to maintain closeness:
• Try not to personalize it. Recognize that this time period is not so much about the two of you as it is about your children beginning to grow into their older, more individual selves. In order to accomplish this, they will be trying out new ideas that are different from your own.
• Listen up. When your child does have some different ideas, find out what they are
thinking. Before you draw your battle lines and dig in...Keep Reading |

Mom and Dad police officers give us their expert tips on safety for young adults.
Within three or four days, two promising young college students were shot and killed near their college campuses. These incidents have struck fear in the hearts of Moms. Learn what you can do to protect your kids as they go off to college:
1. The best weapon is prevention: "It's not about what happens when he's grabbing you. It's about how the person gets across the parking lot and beside you in the first place. A weapon is the last resort," said Samantha Wilson, child safety expert and police officer. Instruct your eager college-goers to be smart about where they go and pay attention to their surroundings.

One Mom, fed up with motherhood, decides to go on strike. Should other Moms join her?
| If motherhood was a job offered at an employment agency, there'd be few takers. Let see...be on call 24 hours a day, no healthcare benefits, no paid holidays or room for advancement. Apparently, last week, Melissa Dean, a mother of four unruly teenage boys, had enough of her job description and "went on strike." staying at home only one night a week and leaving her out-of-control boys to fend for themselves and has since been charged with
neglect. Yeah, Motherhood is hard work, but is it really time to unionize? | | |

New book says today's tweens swear more than ever.
Holy crap! According to the teen Web site YPulse,
there has been a significant increase in cursing among tweens. Rather
than use words like "um," "like" and "ya know," to fill a gap in
conversation, they usually choose instead to use an expletive. In fact,
Timothy Jay, author of the new book Why We Curse says that kids are now using about 80 curse words a day. WTF?
Do your tweens curse like sailors? If so, what have you done to stop them from swearing? |

Frances Bean seems to be turning out OK. Does it mean Britney's troubles won't necessarily create messed up kids?
It could never be said Frances Bean, the daughter of Courtney Love and Kurt Cobain, had a typical childhood. Between a brilliant rock star dad who committed suicide and a Mom who is no stranger to drugs and bizarre troubles, you'd think Frances might end up holding up a liquor store--or at least hanging out around one. Yet, Frances Bean has emerged, at 15, as a girl with a head on her shoulders. Keep Reading...

One mom shares the heartbreaking loss of her child.
When we found out that 82 youths have died from the "Choking Game", we wanted to warn moms about the severity of the new fad. Mom Loni shared: "Thank you so much for posting this and informing parents. December 11th marked three years since the death of our 16-year-old son from this "game." We homeschool our children and you'd think our son would have been somewhat sheltered from knowing about this, but he still found out, "played" and died. His two younger brothers found him, which has been a difficult time of healing for them. Talk to your kids about this just as you would drugs, sex, strangers, etc. It's my daily prayer that my son's death will help save other kids' lives."
Have you talked to your child about the choking game? Tell us in the Mom•Logic Community... |
